This afternoon we headed to Waimea Canyon; known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." The drive takes about 45 minutes or so - and given it was an overcast day, we decided it would be a good adventure. Samuel actually enjoyed the journey, while Luke slept most of the way - so it worked out just fine.
On the way, we decided to stop by the Taro Ko Factory - they make really good taro chips. However - it's just a tiny house that is actually scary looking... Every year we venture here for taro chips. It has always reminded us of the "Soup Nazi" in one of the Seinfeld episodes. Like... if you make a wrong move, they won't sell you any chips. And in fact we were here with our friends one year and Joe went in for some chips. They told him they were sold out - however when our friends daughter went in right after Joe, he sold her 2 bags!
Anyway - Joe went up to the house, but they were closed. So on our way back we stopped again... Joe said if I wanted chips that I had to go in this year. YIKES! I have NEVER gone inside to get the chips in all of the years we have come here (it has always been Joe's job!) But I decided to try it... So I went inside and the 2 "elderly" Hawaiians pointed at the 4 varieties of taro chips in a small Tupperware container on the counter. I asked which was the most popular and they told me they didn't have those in stock - however they did give me 4 samples to try - so I picked a sweet potato with a spicy seasoning. I was very proud of myself for having been brave enough to go in the little shack! PICTURES BELOW.
We also stopped by a restaurant that USED to be the most "westerly brew pub in America." However, I guess they stopped brewing, so now it is just a restaurant. The lunch was very good and the staff helped make Samuel feel special. They even used his "CVS Card" and ran him a copy of our receipt to sign (he gave him his play credit card to pay.) That was so nice of them!
We also made a quick pit-stop by the Kauai Coffee Co. and had a latte! Yummy...
It was late getting home for Samuel's nap - so he is now peacefully asleep... and we are tired out too. I guess we are getting old... huh?!
